A Brief History of Graphic Technology
Invention of paper
The woodblock print on Rice Paper cut for the first time in China during the 7th century Tang Dynasty, as a means to register thousands of sheets of paper with a memory of the revered empress. The paper sheets were placed on the summits and shrines throughout China, so his name was never forgotten.
Engraving wood
The oldest printing technique is iterative, woodcut, wood or printing. It was invented as a method for the printing on fabric in China. This had reached Europe via the Byzantine and Islamic before 1300, to print patterns on textiles.
Movable Type
Furniture and reusable type was invented in China around 1045. This type allows a printer to print ordering words a theme, then reuse the same again for a new and completely different matter.
Printing Press
During the 15th century in Germany, Gutenberg improved the Chinese idea of movable type, invented the printing press.
Engraving
Engraving on metal became popular between 1450-1460. Recorders using a hardened steel tool called a burin to cut designs on the surface of a metal plate. The metal plate was inked, then wiped, leaving ink only in the engraved lines for printing.
Etching
The use of the etching process applied to engraving was invented by Daniel Hopfer of Germany around 1500. In the etching process, the artist "scratches" your design on a metal plate coated with wax. The plate is then exposed to acid that eats into the exposed surface of the metal, leaving behind lines sunk into the plate. The metal plate is cleaned, inked, and then dried, leaving only the ink in the lines of engraving for printing.
Drawing Board / Table
A smooth, flat surface that is perfectly "square" for the development of precision and writing. At least one of the edges, usually the left, is perfectly square to accommodate a T-square for making accurate angle.
T-Square
A technical drawing instrument in the form of a "T", mostly used as a guide for drawing horizontal lines on a drafting table.
Squares
A triangular piece of plastic with the center removed. The outer edges are typically beveled to ink. Squares usually come in two types, one with 90-45-45 degree angles and the other with 30-60-90 degree angles. Set against the T-square, triangle allows the artist or illustrator to draw a perfectly straight line at the desired angle.
French Curve
A French curve is a plastic template made to achieve many different curves, and is used to draw smooth curves of different shapes and sizes for an artist or draftsman.
Grilles
A ruling pen is an instrument fashioned Ink Drawing. It is used to draw precise lines from thin to thick.
RAPIDOGRAPH Pen
In 1953, became RAPIDOGRAPH Rotring pen techniques to the provision of lines by graphic artists, designers and speaker. It replaces the ruling pen and technical drawing easier to achieve.
Desktop Publishing
Electronic publishing and use of computer aided design has paid almost all the above instruments and processes of extinction, with perhaps the paper and printing survivors solitary. But with the growing use of online communication, digital storage and retrieval, paper and the printed word has difficulty maintaining the pace of the virtual world.
